Founders Of The Sarit Centre

 

Vidhu Ramji Shah

1895 – 1960. Born in Gagwa, Jamnagar, India.   Arrived Kenya 1909.  Joined Meghji Ladha & Co and worked in the firm’s Escarpment and Limuru Branches.   In 1918 travelled back to India to collect his wife  Ratanben.   On return,  joined the Keshavji Parbat & Co. partnership in Thika and then Fort Hall (now Murang’a) where he eventually settled to trade on his own account.   It was here that a family of four sons and five daughters were born and grew up.      Secretary and treasurer of the Visa Oshwal Community in Murang’a and successful businessman with many diversified interests.

Jadavji Ratanji Rughani

1898 – 1983.   Born in Porbander, India.   Arrived in Kenya in 1914, and became a commodity trader in the Mount Kenya area, first in Nayuki, Fort Hall, Kutus, Mihuti before he finally settled in Karatina.    It was here that the family of three sons and four daughters were raised when he returned in 1945 from an extended visit to India to start the renowned Duka la Mehta bookshop and general store.   Lived to officiate at the laying of the foundation stone of the Sarit Centre
